The Extinguisher

Vyner Street London

2011

As it became dusk I prepared my equipment for the task ahead. Starting at one end of Vyner Street I progressed along its entire length, turning each street light off in sequence, sixteen in all. I took on the role of the heroic urban street worker following on from those early 19th century lamp lighters.

My task was not to give light, but to momentarily take it away leaving a black space in the street. I set out to interfere with the infrastructure of a city and its electricity provider, so causing a slight token interference with its order.

The edited film of the action was presented in the window of the Gooden Gallery, Vyner Street, along with the hard hat, high visibility vest and switch equipment used This enabled an audience that inhabited  the same street to view the mediated evidence of the work they may have missed first hand.
