Colour Codes

South Marine Drive Bridlington

2011

I worked as the lead artist with the design team of Bauman/lyons and Estell Warren for the Bridlington Spa Environs. My particular focus was on the improvements for South Marine Drive where the modified ramp within the banks of Princess Mary Promenade links the road with the promenade.

I have responded to the new promenade by creating 8 double sided LED flags mounted on columns, which celebrate its pedestrian entrances along South Marine Drive.

Flags have a strong relationship with the coast and the sea. I have researched the maritime code flags, traditionally used for sending messages at sea, where each flag represents a letter and phrase. Then after carrying out action research in situ to develop my proposal, I collaborated with particular groups, organisations and people who have a relationship with the South Marine Drive area of Bridlington to create they own code flags and phrases. These designs have been presented using low energy high visibility LED technology, which are visible during the day and night. Mixing two different coloured LEDs has created some of the individual colours. The Flags come on every 20 minutes, from midday until midnight. The length of time the flags are on is determined by the speed of the wind at the time. The whole system is controlled by radio technology.
